Another trip to Wales and with mediocre results from Steve at Snetterton we hoped for some better luck at Pembrey. Ryan in car #21 was looking forward to his first outing at a Welsh track and we rocked up in the new team Mobile HQ aka Winnebago with high hopes.
Weather was very windy with rain threatening and after an initial 30 minute free practice, it was time for qualifying.
Qualifying saw the large entry split into 2 groups, and with changeable conditions Steve qualified in 9th in his group and Ryan in 12th. With a full entry it was back to the 2-out-of-3 race format, with Steve and Ryan racing in Race 1, Ryan in Race 2 and Steve in Race 3.
Race 1 was soon upon us and Steve lined up in 11th with Ryan close behind in 14th. Racing was close and clean, with both cars making progress to finish 8th and 12th respectively – great results and some well needed championship points.
It was time to kick back and enjoy the “fine” Welsh weather for the rest of the day, and with Ryan racing on the Sunday morning and Steve Sunday Afternoon, we hoped the weather would play out overnight. Alas it was not to be and the morning arrived and the rain with it.
Race 2 for Ryan was in damp/wet conditions and a slower pace ensued than it had in race 1. Starting from 13th, Ryan made excellent progress to finish the race 8th, albeit with a trip to the Clerk of the Course for an unsighted overtake through a yellow flag. A slap on the wrist, but a fantastic result for his second ever event.
After a great 2nd race for Ryan, Steve had a lot to live up to and starting from 12th he chose to run on dry tyres on the wet track, hoping the rain would stay away for the race, which it did. Conditions were however quite wet and challenging. Moving through the field to 6th place, a small excursion resulted in dropping back to 7th just before the race was over. A good haul of championship points leaving lots to do in the remaining 6 races, only 10th in the championship and the target of 5th seems some way off.
